MUSINGS

poems, thoughts & prose

what's next?

So what happens when it doesn’t go to plan?

When pieces don’t fit and items aren’t in the gaps where you thought you left them for safekeeping?

The path you used to walk was firm underfoot

not that long ago,

but now the ground gives way like the gravel’s bleeding.

It’s the what’s next?

The closest rope you that you reach, dangles from high,

knotted, twisting, fraying.

At least it’s a life

Unsure if it’s worth living,

but

you keep going

for now,

rounding another corner while your heart is still beating.

spring has sprung

I hear my breath slow as the bee bumbles past,

And watch the man and his dog march along the river, quite fast.

Teenage girls huddle and giggle then whisper and glance-

Then continue their gossip over a couple bags of cheese XLs and a four-pack smuggled from a parents

by chance.

The last cloud in the sky slowly drifts out of frame,

leaving a perfectly crisp cinematic blue once again.

Two magpies swoop down, bouncing, pecking and dancing in the long grass nearby,

bestowing that famous joy that gathers and rubs off on them with their trinkets up high.

The sun warms me, slowly softening my legs, my face,

and letting me sink gently into myself, into my bones,

into my space.

A girl whizzes past on a scooter, the hard tarmac pushing back on the plastic wheels making them roar;

a flurry of pinks, glitter, screaming, ruffles, stickers, streamers, knee pads, Pokémon, water-gun, unicorn horn and more.

A dad twenty seconds behind flashes a smile - but with eyebrows to the heavens and wide eyes,

laden with multiple bags, a child’s single trainer and

an Igglepiggle, full size.

I hear myself saying ‘another spring has sprung’ towards the dad, but he’s already gone.

So, I close my eyes, breathe, and say ‘it’s another winter survived’ into the sun.

nostalgia

a broken shard of glass thrown into the ocean, once sharp and shiny

rides the shores up and down,

discarded.

Up and down

until rounded and softened

and found again

looked upon with grace and beauty.
